work independently and on temporary contracts rather than for a long-term employer

Who is a Freelancer?

Anyone can become a freelancer. As long as he has enough time to do extra jobs.
Business Trading defines perfectly who a freelancer is:
A person or professional who is not an employee of a company but does work for them on their own time and usually in their own location. A freelancer may have many clients who use their services. They are not bound to working for one company.
Where to Freelance?

If you have your own skills then you can freelance anywhere but be sure that you have your own way on how to let employers know that you are capable of doing such job. However if you are looking for doing an online job, you can find websites that offers it. I will list the top sites that freelancers usually join into:

1. oDesk.com
    Odesk is very popular for freelancers. oDesk is known widely to hire remote workers, which we call freelancers. Employers from oDesk can create their own team and have the ability to track the freelancers' progress with the software "oDesk Team". Employers can post jobs for free, but will have to pay 10% fee to oDesk once a provider (freelance workers) get hired. A freelancer can apply up to 20 jobs per week.


2. Freelancer.com
    Freelancer.com is formerly known as GetAFreelancer and this is also a place for outsourcing for employers' businesses.Currently, Freelancer.com covers 234 countries and has 2,441,056 employers. Joining freelancing is free and a freelancer can bid up to 15 jobs per month.


3. Elance.com
Elance is also considered as one of the top freelancing sites. It also offers monitoring system that will allow employers to view the progress of the freelancers' works.
